Hong Kong hosted the 2nd edition of the International Design Furniture Fair (IDFFHK) from 25th to 27th August 2017 and our team was there to witness this successful event.
IDFFHK is strongly supported by the Hong Kong Government and local design institutions: as stated by Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR,
“design is one of the fastest growing contributors to Hong Kong’s creative industries, generating over 530 million USD to our economy a year, and attaining 15% annual growth over the past decade.”
Rather than being a real trade show focused on interior and furniture design ( very few international brands like Knoll, Baccarat and Swarovski were present with their products), IDFFHK is establishing its presence as a cultural and creative forum where presentations by renowned international designers are brought on stage.
IDFFHK organized more than 18 speeches during the Dialogue Speakers Series, extremely well curated and presented, where renown and emerging stars of Design contributed their valuable opinions and findings on the topic “Redefining Luxury”, IDFFHK’s theme for this year.
The true spirit of IDFFHK could be summarized by the words of Mr. Steve Leung, Founder of Steve Leung Designers Ltd. and President of the International Federation of Interior Architects:
“In terms of design fairs, there are currently many events cropping up across different cities in China and Singapore but I think HK has its own unique competitiveness: it is the real hub of Asia. We definitely need a solid design fair to be home-grown in HK and we need it so that we can maintain our competitiveness. So having IDFFHK in HK to me is really a great platform. I can really see the potential in making it the most important design fair to attend in Asia.”
Among the other enlightening experiences staged at IDFFHK which are worth to be mentioned, was the design exhibition “City of Towers”: an installation presenting research into a new paradigm for the design and construction of high rise buildings led by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Our Dezoo team definitely enjoyed the short visit at IDFFHK 2017 and recognized the importance of this Fair to foster business and creative exchanges. HK is becoming a prominent destination for design exchanges and an exciting hub to educate the younger generation to the higher excellence of interior design. We just hope to see more and more of such high-end events in South East Asia.
